Michael Buble - Today Show 10/13/2009

Now ya'll know I love Michael Buble, but ummm, what was the deal with the torn jeans on the Today Show this morning? It was disturbing... his stylist should have known better than that. He's back to the more clean cut look (except the jeans) and he's lost quite a bit of weight. He looks healthy. I noticed it when he was on Oprah last week, but it was even more obvious this morning.

I'm really anxious to get this CD. I want to get the MP3 download, but I also like to have something to hold on to...something real, not just digital. I actually picked it up in the store Saturday when I was running errands and such, but I put it back. Guess I was just not ready yet.

OH! The Drama

Seems as if I have spent the better part of this year putting out one dramatic fire after another, but I must say that my resolve has been thoroughly tested in since July 2009. It has been a back to back stream of issues that had the potential to drive me insane.

Just when it seemed as if everything was under as much control as possible, another shoe dropped. We have a leak! Yes water is leaking... the arrow on the water meter was spinning fast even though no one in the house was using water. The bad news is that this has resulted in a $245 water bill, the good news is that the leak is NOT in the house (phew)! It was strategically hidden slightly under ground at an outdoor faucet. Even though the ground appeared to be intact and dry, we discovered that once the top soil was disturbed, it fell away and revealed a large puddle... like a mini-sinkhole.

Oh well, at least it can be fixed without the need for a plumber.

Read a lot this week (mostly over the weekend) since there wasn't much to do. Found a new series by Kresley Cole to add to the growing lists of series that I read. It gives me something to do... I play catchup on them while awaiting the next release.

I think this is my favorite book in the series thus far. I found my self laughing quite a bit, and the mystery/plot was as good as, if not better than the romance.

The Rogue Hunter was okay... not as good as some of the previous vamp books though. Mortimer and Sam were a bit dull, and what was meant to be funny really wasn't. The plot was good, but overall the story was a little flat. It's still worth reading, and if you are following this series, according to Ms. Sands, Mortimer and Sam will be in future books, and it's a nice to know how they got their start.

Weekly Roundup 03/27/2009

Even though this was last week, I'll add it here as I'm starting this new weekly roundup with little events from throughout the week. Rob put a little chicken and vegetables on the grill last Thursday, so I didn't have to cook. I just cut up the veggies and put them on the skewers for the kabobs. So lately our indoor cat, Madison, who is not allowed outside, has had an itch to run out the door every time it opens, and since he was in and out the french doors in the kitchen, she either made her way out then, or N2 let her out of the front door. N2 has a habit of holding the screen door open.

Anyway, later that night as he was cleaning up the grill and bringing in supplies, he called me into the kitchen as he was letting "a" cat in the door to ask me if it was our cat. See, lately there has been an influx of cats in the neighborhood, and there are a few that look similar to Madison, so I guess he wasn't sure. By the time I figured out what he was saying, the cat shot by me and into the living room, which was dark, so I wasn't able to get a good look at the markings of the cat, and it was all just a blur. The cat shot through the foyer as Rob and I were in pursuit, which made it run faster and hi-tail it under the desk in the den. As we were just standing there assuming we had some random cat in the house now and trying to figure out what to do, we started tisking and meowing trying to make "our" cat come out of hiding.

Finally, I headed toward the kitchen with the idea of rattling the cat food bag which usually brings our cat running. Standing in the kitchen doorway was "our" cat looking at me. I reached down to touch her just to make sure it was Madison, and she politely turned around and went and sat down so she could look out the french doors in the kitchen. She was probably wishing she could get away from her crazy humans.

Apparently, while we were trying to figure out if the random cat was still under the desk and if it was our cat or not, she had eased out and gone back to the kitchen. I announced several times, with some relief that it was our cat...It was Madison. Relieved that we didn't have some weird cat invading our space.

This one fell flat for me. Phury didn't grow on me like the other characters have throughout the series. Even with all of his issues, I expected more. The Wizard was a total annoyance... I was just ready for him to shut it! As with the previous book in the series there were a lot of subplots, and in this instance, they turned out to be of more interest than the main characters.

This one wasn't as gripping as the first 4 of the series. I too was a bit disappointed with how Jane was handled, but it wasn't a big deal. The book seemed like a collection of plots beginnings for new books in the series that happened to occur as V.'s story moved along. Maybe a little too much plotting for the future and not enough attention paid to this story.

I know I've been missing in action lately, but I've got a new addiction. I've been reading like crazy, devouring book after book. I've got to pull back... at least until next weekend :-). As soon as I finish one book, I'm already in search of another one to pounce on. It's a good thing, reading I mean, but it's also extremely addictive for me. After I finish my work for the day, all I can think about is my next reading dose. In a way, I've been preparing myself for what I want to do next, which is write. One day, I would love to see my name on the NY TImes or USA Today bestseller list. Wouldn't that be something? I wonder though, if I have anything to say?

I'm pretty sure most of you are not at all interested in what I'm reading...Paranormal Romance..., but it's what I like. I have a preference for the Vampire Romance. I've always looked at practically any Vampire TV series or movie I could, but reading the different takes on Vamps has hooked me. Mentally, I've already started forming the outline of what I want my "otherworld" to be like. I visit the websites of the authors I've read, and looked at their advice on writing. Almost all of them recommend reading as much as possible, and that's what I'm doing.

How did all of this begin? Well, back in October 2008, I started reading a little series by Stephenie Meyers... Twilight. I was also hooked, along with Jazz, on the HBO Original Series... TRUBLOOD based on the Sookie Stackhouse Novels by Charlaine Harris, and that was all it took. After stumbling upon the social network for readers and writers, GoodReads.com, I've been adding "Read" books to my shelf at a steady pace. Check out my books on Goodreads.

So now you know why I haven't been posting much lately. Between work and reading, my time is on lockdown... it's been a fantastic ride and a great escape from the ho-hum of an economic downturn and desparation. If you need an escape, pickup a book (visit your local library or bookstore), read an e-book (eBooks.com) or listen to an audio book or short story. Have fun... escape!

I've been using Posterous since it launched. It's a neat little blogging platform that is easy to use. It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas...

Thank goodness! Finally something is going right. After a not so good week, and things just going ALL wrong, I was channel surfing because I have not become absorbed in reading Charlaine Harris', Real Murders. I decided to take a chance, and check the T.V. schedule for SPIKE TV with my fingers crossed that they would have a Bond Marathon for the holiday. YES THEY WILL! (This is me jumping up and down screaming!) I can't tell how many days the Marathon will run, but it will at least cover Christmas Eve and Christmas day!!!! It kicks off at 9am Christmas Eve. The cable guide only had information through Christmas day, but I can hopefully get more info online or wait a few days and check the schedule again.

Going After Niche Markets Or Practicing Digital Segregation?

I am so tired of race issues. I posted this because I actually was able to stomach some of the comments to this article. I do agree to some extent with both sides of the argument.

I can say as a 'Black' American who is Web savvy that I don't think I will be using Blackbird. That's not because I feel it's racist, but because I have enough extras on my computer and from a browser standpoint, Firefox is my browser of choice. If I want to look at Black sites, then I know how to Google. I just don't see adding more clutter to my world. Of course, I'll rethink this if Blackbird actually takes off, and it becomes a necessity that I have it. I have to stay up on things.

I thought about informing my friends and family of the new browser "Blackbird" for African-Americans, but after deciding I wasn't going to use it, I didn't want to clutter your worlds either. (But now you have the information... do with it what you will!) I mean, a lot of people don't know which browser they are using anyway. All they care about is getting online to do what they do. Unless you're a techie or designer or whatever, do you really care what browser you use? I think the people debating the issue have completely overlooked this argument.

I have been guilty of playing to this type of niche marketing in the form of BOBOBusiness.com (Black Owned Black Operated Business) and BlackWritersNetwork.com, but these sites are no longer active, and never really took off for various reasons, the main one being that I just didn't have the time to deal with them.

It really trips me out that people get so bent out of shape about things like this. I mean in the grand scheme of things, is it really that important? I have read some really racist things on the Web. I mean statements that you would not have to wonder if they were racists or not. There was no debating it. I don't see arguing over something trying to decide if it's racists or not. If it's racist, trust me, you won't need to wonder about it.

I asked the questions a while ago about combining and moving all of my blogs to chellesspotblog.blogspot.com. The few responses I received said to keep them separate. Well, maybe that wasn't a good idea because what has happened is that I don't post to ANY of them because I don't have the time. In addition to this blog, which I consider my personal blog, I also had a design blog, a blog with printing specials, a blog of my favorite websites, a showcase blog, and the list goes on and on and on.

A month or so ago, I did away with my namesake blog and websmartie because I was trying to lessen my burden, but even with the load lighter, I still am not satisfied with my blogging status. So, to make myself happy, I am going to post everything here, and the others will eventually be turned into blogger xml templates that I will sell at ThemeForest.com, my favorite template site. Instead of creating all these blogs that just sit and do nothing, just because I had a great idea for a design that fell by the wayside, I will earn a residual income from them.

I've said all of this to say that... if you decide you would like to continue reading my blog, in addition to the usual posts you find here, there will be more information on web 2.0 applications, printing solutions, design resources, Wordpress, blogger and more. Of course, I will redesign this blog to better house the new subject matter, so please stick around for what's coming.

A condensed dictionary for the MEN in our lives! Love, M

(1) Fine: This is the word women use to end an argument when they are right and you need to shut up.

(2) Five Minutes: If she is getting dressed, this means a half an hour. Five minutes is only five minutes if you have just been given five more minutes to watch the game before helping around the house.

(3) Nothing: This is the calm before the storm. This means something, and you should be on your toes. Arguments that begin with nothing usually end in fine.

(4) Go Ahead: This is a dare, not permission. Don't Do It!

(5) Loud Sigh: This is actually a word, but is a non-verbal statement often misunderstood by men. A loud sigh means she thinks you are an idiot and wonders why she is wasting her time standing here and arguing with you about nothing. (Refer back to # 3 for the meaning of nothing.)

(6) That's Okay: This is one of the most dangerous statements a women can make to a man. That's okay means she wants to think long and hard before deciding how and when you will pay for your mistake.

(7) Thanks: A woman is thanking you, do not question, or faint. Just say you're welcome. (I want to add in a clause here - This is true, unless she says 'Thanks a lot' - that is PURE sarcasm and she is not thanking you at all. DO NOT say 'you're welcome', that will bring on a 'whatever').

(8) Whatever: Is a woman's way of saying I don't care. Leave me alone.

(9) Don't worry about it, I got it: Another dangerous statement, meaning this is something that a woman has told a man to do several times, but is now doing it herself. This will later result in a man asking 'What's wrong?' For the woman's response refer to # 3.

A Note to a Friend about Thanksgiving...

...We stayed home. I don't like to travel on the holidays. I always cook, even though we sometimes go to my husband's Grandmother's house where all of his family gathers. So, we ate here, then went over there for a bit. I use to be upset and depressed over the holidays too, but I think that's because we are a bit nostalgic about our childhoods, and when you grow up it's just not the same unless YOU make the way YOU want it. I know I have a big household, but even before it was so many of us, I still made a big deal if not for the kids for me, so I created my own tradition so to speak. So, now everyone expects the little things I do. My kids hang out in the kitchen with me while I cook for two or three days. My husband's brother's come over, and sometimes my brother does too, and we all eat, the guys play PS2, watch TV, and just have a good time.

I must say that this year was much better than usual, because I cooked everything I could in advance, and I was less stressed on the big day. From now on, I will do it that way.

The only thing I miss is that for several years, SPIKETV would play a week long marathon of nothing but James Bond for Thanksgiving and Christmas and I would watch all day and all night until I couldn't hold my eyes open, but they don't do it anymore, so it kinda was disappointing, but I'll get over it. I have most of the movies, but it's not the same as them actually coming on TV. I wish someone would come up with a 24-7 Bond channel. I would never watch anything else.

Be Careful What You Ask For

I made the mistake of asking someone who is extremely anal retentive their opinion. Boy, was that dumb on my behalf. It just really chaps my hide when someone thinks they are the bee's knees and just knows everything about nothing at all. How do these people have the nerve to try and tell me what to do, especially when they have got some real raggedy junk going on. LOL. I don't know why I let it get under my skin... it is the most irritating thing ever!

I'm on a new reading kick. I'm reading the Sookie Stackhouse series penned by Charlain Harris. HBO's original series, "True Blood" is based on these novels. Believe it or not, Jazz is totally absorbed in the series with me. Although I doubt she'll read the books, she's already saying she can't wait for the new season that begins sometime in the Summer 2009.

OPERATION SURVIVAL: Paranoia or Prophecy?

PREFACE
I've always felt like something would happen during my lifetime that would require survival skills. I read survival and wilderness tips a lot when I was growing up. I've become more aware of this feeling I have since the hurricanes and having to prepare for disaster every year. Now, that I have 4 others that I am responsible for, I am more paranoid than ever.

Periodically, I visit survival supply sites. I haven't actually purchased supplies, but I do try to stay aware of what's available. The problem is I don't know what to prepare for or where I would store the supplies. Just to put my mind at ease, I'll have to think of something....

but I digress....

Take a look at: Divas On The Prowl....this site was your typical online news/magazine for African-American women. Now, I'm not sure what's going on. I scanned over the home page after looking at the email newsletter I received this email:

I'm really interested to know what every one thinks of this site, so please comment on this post. I tried to watch the 144000 videos, but they were a bit much, so be warned. You might not be able to stomach the language.

There was never any mention of why the site turned from an online magazine into divas on the prowl for survival. I'm really curious to know why the change. What do you think?

Don't Hate The Player... Hate The Game

Sometimes, that's really hard to do. I mean is Elisabeth (ABC's The View) on the RNC payroll or what? No matter what anyone is talking about, if it is remotely political she finds some way to make it all about how great McCain is and how we're all doomed if Barack becomes President.I didn't really like her before, but now, I wish she would just simply shut-up! I usually love the "Hot Topics" segment, but lately it's just been a train wreck.

For those who say, she's the only one holding it up for the right against a panel full of lefties, well, maybe she should stop being so combative, take a deep breath and actually HEAR what others are saying before she starts in on her political propaganda. Many times, she assumes Whoopi is saying one thing, when in reality, she saying something completely different. It's really tiresome.

Yeah, they talk over her, but she screams over them. She never let's anyone finish before she totally jumps the gun with the wrong idea because she doesn't even try to hear people out.

She sooooo needs to get a grip. I don't know how the others can stand it. I'm sure ratings are up, but it's really annoying. If she continues to act like a crazy person after this election is over, I may just have to find something else to listen to at 11am.

Okay... that's my two cents worth!

I'm sure I'll get all types of nasty comments from Liz lovers and those on the Right, so let me warn you now. This is MY blog. I can say what I please because it is MY blog. Roasted Chicken Recipes

I saw this on Oprah and thought I would try it. Although I don't buy whole chickens, I do buy chicken breasts, and I'm hoping the roasted chicken marinade will work using breasts. I just don't want to have to pick meat off of the bones. It's already gross enough, which is why I buy breasts so I don't have to see all that grossness before cooking it.

Anyway, I decided to share with those of you who eat chicken. I have a family sized pack of chicken breasts in the freezer now that I wasn't sure what to do with. I think I will try the enchilada recipe this weekend. If you try any of these, let me know how they turn out.

More Money... More Problems

One of the largest auto dealerships abruptly closed it's doors yesterday leaving an additional 300 +/- people unemployed in the Central Florida area. All lots nationwide (13) have closed and according to news reports, Bill Heard Chevrolet attributes the closing to the economic downturn and the increase in gas prices. Apparently, employees didn't have a clue. They were told to cash their checks quickly, pack up their things and leave the property.

Even though I've become a Ford Chick with my last few auto purchases, I still have a fondness for Chevys! Be strong ya'll... LIKE A ROCK!

I had an epiphany today about this $700B buy out that Henry ‘Hank’ Paulsen is proposing.

It is 9-11 all over again:

Paulsen has alerted George Bush that the sky will fall if the government does not buy up all the bad debt. George Witless Bush hangs on his every word. He [Henry Paulsen] is a Wall Street knowledge-bank, he understands these things, Bush says, so ‘I’m letting him handle it…’ Bush paints the picture to American citizens that have been described to him by his Republican chosen expert and considers his proposal the only way to resolve the problem.

[Remember Bush/Cheney and his Secretary of State painting a scene of desperation to the United Nations—they [Saddam/Iraq] have nuclear weapons!]

Now all he [Bush] needs to do is get Congress and the Senate on board—mission accomplished. Our blind leading the blind legislators fumble another life changing decision and the American taxpayer has bought bad debt for generations of paying it back. For what and why? So life can continue as we know it? This is life as I know it:

The rich get the tax breaks
Wall Street is where the wealthy invest; and where the corporations invest their employees’ 401k and other retirement instruments
The corporations get the tax breaks; their CEOs get millions in bonuses
The corporations’ lobbyists write federal legislation for politicians and bribe the politicians for their votes
Federal legislators gave away their authority and power that could have prevented this supposed imminent financial disaster
The average citizen has to work hard everyday to stay even financially
The average citizen works even harder to be able to have some extra money to save
If the average citizen wants to venture to excel and maybe have their own business, they work a full time job, work in their business, and work weekends too for many years just to get things going because no one will invest in their business until it shows a substantial profit

I ask you, who’s life style will change? I say it’s that negligible percentage that we, the American taxpayers are hosts to, the parasites at the top! We, the taxpayers have been through hard times, many times. What do the rich know? They’re out of touch with the working man. What Wall Street and its minions are afraid of is losing their ill-gotten gains off the backs of others. I say it’s time they pay. The rich life as they know it is what’s on the brink.

[They’re crying War, a preemptive strike! Washington votes yes, let’s do it!]

This is not the Taxpayers problem and people should tell their congressmen to vote NO on doing this. The feds should be pursuing how they can impugn the culprits and regulating what still remains of the financial sector.

Let Wall Street crumble! We made it through the depression and we’ll make it through this. We’re already in debt from one huge ill-advised decision. Why listen to another ‘all of a sudden’ radical suggestion? Why throw more money at a fix that no one knows for sure if it will even work? Do you see any impact on the average taxpayer that wasn’t already happening before the alarm was sounded—the feds did not care then and they don’t care now. They just want to protect corporations and Wall Street and their own lifestyles and lobbyist buddies. Stand back—let it happen!

What I'm Reading

I'm a little obsessed with this Young Adult series! (Yes, I know I'm an old lady :-) I really like a good vamp story, and even though these books are about teens, the stories, at least in the first two in the series, have captivated my attention. That's really saying something, because it doesn't happen often. I'm more of a "boob tube" kinda person. Not crazy about reading unless it is REALLY interesting.

Since I purchased the first book in the series after seeing the author, Stephenie Meyer, on The Ellen Show last week, I've been hooked. I spent ALL of my free time over the weekend reading. I only checked my email twice on Sunday. I think that's a record for me!

I woke up early Sunday morning just to finish the first book, even though I had stayed up late the night before reading until I was not longer able to comprehend and follow the story and the letters were a blur. I finished it, and was instantly wanting the next book so I could find out what else would happen.

The first book "Twilight" had the Preface and 1st Chapter of the next book "New Moon". I spend most of the day trying not to read it, but finally in the late afternoon I gave in and read it. It was all over at that point, I HAD to get that next book, which I did. I've already read more than half of the 600+ pages. Hopefully, I'll be able to finish it tonight then it will be on to the next book.

I'm already wondering what in the world I will do with myself when I finish the series. I was going to try and spread it out, but looks like that's not going to happen. Reading the Twilight Series has helped me ESCAPE!

Victims of Outsourcing

Well, it's finally trickled down. My family became another victim of outsourcing to other countries. In a round-a-bout way, outsourcing work to Mexico, has left us... me... hanging on to string, with the water already up to my neck and rising fast.

Here's what happened. A year or more ago, the company my husband worked for closed an operation in the U.S. and moved it to Mexico. Their headquarters remained here. Bulk orders were completed in their new Mexican plant, but custom orders were still completed in the few U.S. operation that remained.

Apparently, when buyers of the custom products crafted at the location where my husband was employed learned that bulk orders were outsourced to Mexico, they began to pull their orders back. Seems not everyone wants their orders filled outside of the U.S. Go figure!

Anywho, the poor economy, recession, depression, whatever you want to call it has not helped the situation. With the slow down in construction, there was no a big demand for the custom metal fabrication that the company produced.

So on Thursday, September 18, 2008, I was informed that the company would be closing!

I don't think I have processed this fully. I think I'm still in denial. Suddenly, I feel less like working. I think that might be because I know the time is going to come where I have to work 10 times harder than my already 10 times harder. I'm never going to get a break then. I'm exhausted just thinking about it.

7 Years Later

I was curled up at a too little desk in the corner of my bedroom. Pecking away at my beloved green iMac working on a project for a client. Listening to Good Morning America as was my daily routine after getting my then two children off to day care and school. The show was coming to an end when the first plane hit, and the coverage began. Like everyone else, I thought it was an accident, but I was glued to the T.V., and I actually saw the second plane hit the second tower while, if memory serves me, Diane Sawyer, was reporting.

I jumped up and ran to my Dad's room to tell him to turn on the T.V.... and he rest is history.

Now, I know today is 7 years later, and I understand the ceremonies and remembering those who died that day. What I don't understand is why the complete event is, once again, being shown on T.V. I turned on the news this morning, and I saw a stage, so I decided to listen while I worked. I heard a few people speak, they had the moment of silence, etc., then all of a sudden, I turned to actually look at the T.V., and they were replaying the news coverage from that day.

I typically watch MSNBC when the major networks are not showing news. I turned to a few of the other 24 hour news networks, and they were still showing ceremonies not replaying news coverage. So now, I have to wonder, what purpose is served by MSNBC replaying this horrific event? A few clips here and there, but the WHOLE, ENTIRE, event?

I was miles and miles away from all of the events. I'm usually pretty hard, but I must admit that I felt horrible that day, and many days after that. Just watching the replay mad me feel bad all over again. It bothered me so much that I turned it off.

A Unified Front

Lately, I've noticed that once again the country is divided. I take the negative remarks and political attacks personally. It shouldn't be that way, but even if I wasn't for Obama, I would take it personally. I think it's all VERY personal to most African-Americans. My friends have expressed the same feelings.

Yes, it's me, I'm back. I took a little break from posting, mainly because I didn't have anything to say. Not feeling passionate enough about anything lately... not enough to blog about it. Also, I've been rather busy with work, and trying to survive in this horrible economy. Trying to make ends meet has turned into a full-time job.

I'm into so much right now. I need to clear my head, get my thoughts organized, put my plans on paper, so that I can do what I always do, either let it all fall by the wayside, or change direction completely. I think I have an issue! I have all these brilliant ideas but no follow-thru. I think I get bored.

I've been doing the social networking thing in my free time. I'm "tweeting" on Twitter, finding and making friends on Facebook, and even trying to come up with a nice customization for my MySpace page. The new Internet me is coming soon!

I was not that thrilled with what I saw last night. The show talked about some of the disparity in the Black community, but didn't fully explain why things are that way.

I'm also disappointed, but not surprised with the "White" response to the show and the various discussions that I've read. I think the feedback is scandalous, and that's all I've got to say about that!

Cabbage Boob!

Yesterday was my last day of breastfeeding J2. It's sad, but needed to be done because he is iron and vitamin D deficient. He's still trying to feed, but I just offer him the bottle instead. I was finally able to find something that he will drink from a bottle with no problem. It's Silk's PLAIN Organic Soy Milk! It's not half bad. I tried before I gave it to him. I don't like vanilla flavored stuff, so I had a quart of it in the fridge that I was planning to try myself. I put some in a sippy cup for him, but he wouldn't take it, so after he screamed a while wanting to breastfeed, I put the soy in a bottle and he sucked it right up. I got 8.5 ounces in him yesterday. His Dr. says he should have 32oz. of milk a day, so he's on the right track.

Last night was a little rocky, but once he saw that he realized that the boobies were gone, he settled for his pacifier,

This morning I was able to get him to take about 4 oz of pediasure although he's still not too keen on it. I'm still working on getting him to eat solid foods. He fights me pretty much every step of the way. I just put a spoonful in while he's screaming at me. He doesn't always spit it out, so I guess whatever works.

He hasn't breastfed since I got the call from the Doc around 2pm yesterday, so I'm engored of course. My left side is ok, but the right side is humongous! I google and found that cabbage leaves are a good remedy. I knew this, but I forgot. I happened to buy some cabbages this morning... thank goodness. So now, I'm walking around with a cabbage boob! I didn't try this when I weened N2, didn't need to, so we'll see how it works.

I Need A "MAXI" Dress!

I looked at my blog before signing in to post today, and at first glance, I thought it had been hacked and that some of my posts had been deleted, but then I realized that those posts were mental notes stored as drafts for future posts and that I had not actually put finger tip to keyboard to make it happen.

I will be attending the wedding of a family member on Rob's side on 08/08/08 at 8pm! Ha! Neat.. huh? Anyway, I need a dress for the event. It's going to be more like a party than a wedding and reception. It's at a local somewhat high-end hotel that caters to tourists and large conferences, etc. I want one of those long summery dresses (a Maxi Dress). I saw a lady on my way out of the grocery store with one on. It was very pretty, a bit dark for my purpose because the base color was black, with bold diagonal stripes. But I really liked the dress, and considered asking where she got it, but decided against it since I looked like something that had crawled out of bed minutes earlier.

So, I'm on the hunt for the perfect Maxi Dress that looks like a million bucks but costs only a few bucks. I don't want it to be a halter or thin straps, I'd prefer if it didn't emphasize the boob area, and I want flowing fabric with a nice, not too overpowering print. From what I've seen thus far, that pretty much leaves nothing to choose from.

I think I will step out of my comfort zone, and do something different. I don't like to take photos AT ALL... being recorded on video is also out of the questions, but I think I want to do a video blog. I don't have a web cam, and I could have had one built into my laptop but I decided against it because I thought I would never use it, but now I wish I had added it.

Oh well, this way I can get one that works on my Mac and the PC. I plan to do a series of articles and templates for Blogger users, and I want to make a record of the process. I still need to work out the kinks in my head, but this is my plan.

7 Year Itch

I have a real problem with the 7 year itch. I thought it was just when dealing with other people, but I've also noticed a pattern with my work and to a certain extent my children.

How? You ask...

My first 3 of 4 children are 7 years apart. Don't know what that has to do with the itch concept, but I thought it was worth noting that the 7 year thing is a trend in some form or fashion.

I was employed at my first two 'real' jobs for 7 years, both of which went out of business for different but somewhat similar reasons. They had ME in common... does that make me a jinx?

I have been self employed (officially) designing in one form or another for 7 years. Guess what? I am sooooo starting to HATE it with a passion!!!!

I have told Rob and Brandi (shout out to B! :-)... that I NO LONGER WANT TO DO THIS. I don't think either one of them takes me very seriously when I say this, but I do want out to a certain extent. I want to be able to pick and choose who I do work for. I want to be exclusive. I want to be one of those designers that people get on a waiting list for in order to get their work done. I want to design on MY TERMS!

My creativity has been tapped out by all this fly-by-night crap that I do. I feel like I have wasted my design skills and have not been able to evolve into what I want to be because I'm always stuck with taking crappy jobs because I need the income.

I don't totally HATE what I do, I just don't want to do it this way anymore. I don't want to open up another email or answer another that causes my blood to boil because I'm being asked to do the most ridiculous thing that basically negates every design principle and standard I've learned, and that makes me look like an ameteurish hack while I'm striving to be one of the best.

Just as potential clients are selective about their designer, this designer wants to be VERY selective about the clients she accepts!

Torn Between Two Loves

#1... Chelle's Spot has been around since I found out the Internet was the best thing since sliced bread. It was the home of my first HTML pages and the first domain name I purchased. I've considered letting chellesspot.com expire many times, but couldn't part with it. As you can see, I figured out what to do with it, and I made the right choice in using it for my blog. It's ME!

#2... I have a passion about the Internet (sliced bread and all). Some consider it an addiction or obsession. I can't deny it... there are worse things I could be doing besides surfing and lurking. A few years ago, I came up with the idea to do a blog site showcasing all the cool things I come across on a daily basis. It's my way of putting my addiction to good use. (NOTE: I did a little research and found some of the most popular blogs in all categories, and NONE of them do what I'm doing.) WebSmart-ie.com is still in the planning/alpha stage, so the posts are only examples of the actual content that will appear on the blog.

Now to the issue that has me torn...

Should I combine my efforts and use one blog for everything, or should I keep the two divided? Please post your comments. Help me to decided.

Why am I so 'eccentric' about somethings? Sometimes, I feel like people think I go out of my way to be difficult or different, but I don't, it's just that I don't like what most people of my age, sex, race, etc. like.

Examples: I'm a GenXer, but I consider myself more of a GenYer. I love technology!

I own maybe 8 CD's, 3 of which are Michael Buble, and I pretty much only listen to those three. Most people I know don't know who he is, and probably wouldn't listen, even if you paid them.

If you've been reading here for a while, you already know that I like old movies and I'm a Bond addict. R's niece was here a few days ago. She's only 21. We were on the subject of Bond, and she said she liked the "ORIGINAL BOND" and didn't like the Bond in Casino Royale? I didn't get what she was saying at first, so I was thinking Sean Connery of course. NOT... poor thing was referring to Pierce Brosnan. Okay, I'm old, and she has bumped her head.... HARD! What in the world...

See this is what's wrong with me. How in the world could you be so uninformed about Bond? LOL I think everyone should know everything I know. Is that wrong? LOL My children probably loathe me for it, but I guarantee you that they will be Bond experts by the time they fly the coupe. I know it's not important in the grand scheme of things, but it's a pattern, a metaphor for life if you will.

I have held this information for a few days because I didn't want to perpetuate silliness and just plain ignorance on the blogosphere, but this further illustrates my point.

I was watching Hillary's speech Saturday, and a male family member of the Bible-thumping persuasion decided to attempt a discussion related to politics, THE END as described in the Bible (Revelations), the Mark of the Beast, the Anti-Christ... just a bunch of junk I was so not interested in hearing or discussing as I was trying to watch the "FRAGINACLE" SPEECH.

I actually was a bit rude, and thought about it (just a little bit) later on. He said something about not knowing where the candidate I want to win came from. He wanted to know if I thought it was strange that my candidate had popped up out of nowhere. I explained that he had actually been around a while, with a little help from google more information could be obtained about my candidate. I even provided this family member with my candidates web address for additional research. Then he hinted that he would have to vote for the competition because he didn't know where this NEW GUY came from, and I just blatantly said that if he was with that side, then he would have to leave my house. I know that was rude because he is an Elder (in both senses of the word), but his reasons for going against my candidate are Conspiracy Theory Foolishness. I would include religion in the description of this foolishness, but I don't think religion should even play a part in this ignorance.

I have to wonder how many people actually believe this bull. Are they crazy? I mean come on people, we have got to do better than this.

Some of what I have said is vague because I don't want to provide searchable terms in my post to further perpetuate this retarded crap.

Geekette Extraordinare

Why can't I get this blogging thing going? I know one problem is I feel guilty about doing anything for myself when I have project work pending. I wish I could get 30-45 days of being able to do exactly what I WANT to do, not what I NEED to do.

I have been collecting information for months now, and it's time for me to start putting info out there, but I get stuck. I end up sitting there looking at the screen. I know what I want to say, what I should say, but it just seems ridiculous when I actually say it. I always feel like "who's going to listen to you? What makes you think you know what you're talking about?"

I know I had all those BIG things to say, but now, I'm "chickening" out! I still really want to do it, it's just that people can be mean in the real world, and they can be down-right vicious in the virtual world. I just have to wrap my mind around taking the heat if I want to be in the "geekette" kitchen. It's just tough because I know it's coming. It's times like these that I wish I had a real fellow geekette around to collaborate with on my web desires.

Election Party

I wish election day was on the weekend. I want to do something exciting since this WILL be THE most EXCITING election ever.... in the history of elections!!!!

What do I need to do to get friends and family (mostly family) to come over during the middle of the work week to watch the election results as they come in, have a little grub and fun, while we wait for Obama to win the highest position in the land? It's not easy to get them to come over on the weekend for free food, booze and fun, so I know it won't be easy during the week.

One idea I had was to send out some really KEWL invites well in advance, and keep sending a little something focused around Obama until the day of the party. Not sure what I would send, but I could probably find some nice printables at barackobama.com. If I were still working a REAL job, I would put in for a vacation day the day after the election well in advance. This is too important not to stay up all night waiting for results... party or not.

Speaking of Parties, this year, will be the "BIG FOUR OHHHH!" for me. I wanted to do something big, but it doesn't look like that's gonna happen cause I don't have anyone to invite.

Growing up, it never mattered that my birthday was so close to Christmas. It didn't become a problem until well into my adult years. Everyone is always busy with their Christmas parties, programs, shopping or whatever. Maybe it's just me. I got snubbed at both of my baby showers, I don't think I will risk being snubbed at my birthday party... Humph!

Going Non-Stop

For most of the week, I have been up at or before dawn and in bed on my way to sleep or out cold by the time the sun goes down. Actually this all started about 2 weeks ago. I just don't seem to be able to sleep late in the mornings anymore. J2 and I are up at around 5:30/6 a.m. even on the weekends. Doesn't matter what time I go to bed, I still wake up early.

So, this week, I've been running here and there, working more than I want, suffering in the heat, cooking, cleaning, doing laundry... you know... THE USUAL, and I just simply run out of energy at around 9pm. At first, it seemed too early to go to bed for the night, but what else would I do. Do more work? Watch more TV? Do more housework?

Sleeping sounds a lot better than any of that stuff.

I purchased the Orlando Sentinel and USA Today this morning. I'll try to get to Borders to pick up the NY Times and Washington Post. I want all four so I can have them framed to hang in my den when it is finally "decorated".

I must admit, I was worried, still am, but I am so PROUD!!! It's not a "ah-ha look what he did (we did)" kinda proud. It's a strong, silent, sit up straight, chest out, head up kinda proud. It's a happy, being a part of something big kinda proud.

I hope we all feel that pride.

Flour and Sugar Storage Container

I saw this advertised as a featured product on AllRecipes.com and thought it was nice. I currently use some really cheesy plastic storage containers I got from the dollar store for sugar, flour and grits. When I had a side-by-side fridge, I just kept it all in the fridge, but now we have what is really an apartment sized fridge, and there's not much room which is why I use the storage containers. I probably will need at least 4 of these because I would also use them for brown rice.

As I was riding home from dropping N2 off at school, for an instant, I was actually sad that I wouldn't have anymore children! WHOA!!!What is that about???!

I had my hair braided back (with weave), and I took it down last night. I'm trying to decide what I actually want to do with my 'do'. I would really like to go natural, but I don't want to cut my hair off in order to do it. Right now, I have it out in a wild way. When I took the braids out, my hair was crinkled so I didn't comb it out, I just put a stretch headband around it, so it kinda looks like a natural 'do'. R. keeps calling me a chia pet! I'm just trying to get a feel for the freedom of natural hair. Problem is, I don't know anything about my natural hair. Decisions... Decisions! I'm leaving it as is until the weekend, and hopefully by then, I'll make up my mind.

This afternoon as my work was coming to an end, I turned to watch my usual "Oprah" at 4pm. Well, it was the one about the puppy mills, and I didn't really want to see it. Too depressing. So I turned to the 4 o'clock local news, but they were just repeating what I had already heard at noon. Then I moved on to channel surfing, and I had a revelation of sorts. I said, "self, why is it that you find it necessary to find something to watch/listen to on T.V.?" I responded by turning off the T.V. off. J2 and I were home alone, so I took a few minutes to talk to him, then I decided to do a quick search at AllRecipes.com to help me decide what to cook for dinner. AllRecipes.com has a neat little search feature where you can put in what ingredients you would like to use or would not like to use, and it produces a list of recipes for you to choose from. I found something simple, quick and different. (I won't say what it is here. Maybe later I'll post it in the Recipes section if it's tasty.) After I checked to make sure I had all the ingredients on hand, I washed a few dishes, and gave J2 a bath. He's a sweaty baby, and it was hot today, so he really needed it.

I've said all of that to say, maybe I need to take a little time everyday, kill the T.V. and Radio, and just be in silence. It was refreshing. R. came in and questioned why I had everything off... if I just needed to enjoy the silence. Actually, yes, a little silence is hard to come by in this house :-).

Wow, I can't believe it! I have exceeded 100 posts on this blog. I never thought I would be able to do it. Now my goal is 500 posts, then 1000...

It is my goal to one day make blogging my full time job. I always wondered how bloggers make a living at what they do, and if it was really possible, but over the past few months, I have become a believer! It can and does happen. Right now, I'm feeling around trying to find my niche. I think I have a good idea of what to do, it's just a matter of having the time to do it while I still work at my "day job".

I do a lot of research for various project and to solve simple design problems, and I'm always running across great blogs. I pay attention to what they are doing, how they do it, and I've even taken the time to subscribe to some of them. (If you haven't subscribed to Chelle's Spot, please do!)

As some of you know, I have a project in the works that I can't wait to launch. It will be a blog that I hope will be helpful to everyone from the novice to the experienced Internet user. I spend so much time on the web, and come across so many great things that I think people who don't spend much time online should know about. I know I am a serious "Geekette" when it comes to the Internet, but I can't help myself. I am totally plugged in, so I figure why not share my excitement and expertise (I really don't like that term... it seems so conceited) about all things Web.

I was discouraged from doing this not so long ago, but it has stuck with me. It's something that I really want to do, and I am going to do it.

Many of my clients ask why I don't teach classes or have special training sessions, although it is still in the back of my mind, I just don't see myself doing that right now. I might even become a consultant one day, but for now, doing it this way allows me a bit more freedom.

I sometimes feel like I'm suffering from information overload, but this will be an outlet for releasing some of the overload.

Look out Blogosphere... here I come!

Hustle and Bustle vs. The Simple Life

I've been really thinking about the things that I no longer do that were relaxing and calming and wonder what happened to all of the free time I had to enjoy doing these things.

Back in "the day" I would:

Look up at the stars. I remember riding home from church or skating or whatever just dazed and looking out the window at the sky.

Watch the clouds. Just sitting outside looking at the clouds as they moved slowly by making note of what shapes the resembled.

Just sit and do nothing. Pressing my finger tips together and moving my hands back and forth until my finger tips felt like they were pressing against another solid surface. (Okay, it sounds weird, but it's actually a really cool feeling).

Watching the "Lightening Bugs". It was just so cool to watch these strange insects light up an otherwise pitch-black summer night.

So much has changed... either there's no time, too much to do, or the general hustle and bustle has just taken over my life. I've really been wondering what has happened to all of us. Why do we feel the need to do EVERYTHING or SOMETHING all the time.

I've also been watching old westerns and movies lately, so maybe that's where some of this thought has originated. I watch and envy how simple life was in our not so distant history. The simple life is very appealing to me.

Of course modern living has it's advantages. You can zap your food, heat it in an instant with a microwave. You can contact friends and family almost any time and any where with the wide use of cell phones and text messaging. You can publish online and be read by visitors all over the world. But many of the advantages of modern living seem to be doing harm to not only our health but our happiness as well.

Technology has made it easy to do things quickly which should free up more time to take it easy. But, do we take it easy? No, we find some other task or project to add and end up with even less free time. Life seems to just fly by while we are completely engrossed in the hustle and bustle. Why do we torture ourselves in this way? To what end?

The Deed is Done

N2 is off to her first day of school!!! She was so excited last night when I was trying to prepare her for the fact that she was going to school, and that I would leave her there to play and learn with the other childrent, but that I would also be back later in the day to pick her up.

Well, it wasn't extremely bad, but she did cry this morning on her way to the classroom. Grandpa was holding her and telling her that if she had any problems to call him and he would come check on her, etc., etc., but she wasn't trying to hear that at all.

She has the same teacher that N1 had when he went to the nursery years ago. Ms. P. is a very nice easy-going lady. It was still breakfast time when we arrived, so Ms. P. took N2 to wash her hands, and instructed me to leave while they were out of the room. I hated doing it that way because N2 has a complex about me just leaving her, even when we are in the house, and I'm sure sure, ducking out on her like that has made things worse. I feel really bad for leaving her like that.

I was feeling more guilt than sorrow this morning. I thought I would cry all the way home, but I didn't. Just a lot of guilt weighing on my mind about how I left her. I want her to adapt to being away from Mommy and home. She's never really gone anywhere without me or R. with her except a little day trip with R's mom a few months ago. Even then, she was accompanied by N1, so it wasn't as if she was away from her immediate family all by herself.

I'm sure she's fine now, at least I hope so. She does hold a grudge, and I can hear her now for the next six months... "Mommy left me!" She still talks about N1 squeezing her hand, and that had to happen every bit of a year ago.

Bye Bye Baby Blues

Tomorrow is the big day! N. is off to her first full day at school (day care). She says she's ready to go to "school", and I'm ready for a little peace and quite, but I know I will miss her. It's great, but heart-breaking at the same time. I'll probably cry most of the way home. I'm sure she'll be fine though.

I've cleaned my office area and the den in preparation for her departure. She usually makes a mess in both places during the day, but this cleaning should hold up at least until the weekend since she'll be gone most of the day.

She knows she'll have to go to bed early tonight so she can get up early. I'm not looking forward to the commute, but it has to be done.

I think she can start pre-K next year, so that will be good.

HOT FUZZ!

OMFG!!! If you haven't seen HOT FUZZ you have got to check out this movie. It is so funny. The dad from one of my favorite movies, The Wedding Date, is in it, and so is my least favorite James Bond... I can never remember his name, but he only did two Bond flicks.

Anyway, I love British movies... mainly comedies, and this movie is British... not sure if it's meant to be a comedy or not, but it has a lot of American references, and it's just hysterical. I had shut down my puter for the night and was all tucked in to go to sleep, but I got hooked on the movie. I was so interested and laughing so much near the end, that I had to open up the notebook again just to post this so that I wouldn't forget. I even sent R. a text to tell him he has got to see this movie. He'll probably get the text in the morning cause he's out cold.

I'm gonna have to buy this bad boy. I can see it becoming a 'cult classic'.

Just remembered the name of the Bond I don't like much... it's Timothy Dalton, and yes, it is an action/comedy, and I'm still laughing!

Veggie Tales

I've been talking about becoming a vegetarian for months. I like meat and poultry, but I really don't like to eat it after I've seen what it looks like prior to cooking it. If I had a personal chef, I would probably not seriously consider giving up meat.

After talking to my future ? Aunt-in-law ? over the weekend, it seems like a more attainable aspiration. She gave up meat for a religious holiday and hasn't eaten it since. She said she no longer feels 'weighed-down' after eating, and it was obvious to me that she had lost quite a bit of weight. I asked her what she fed her family, and she said she just put her food aside before adding meat if the dish called for meat, or she would just eat veggies or vegetarian meat.

What to feed my family or having to prepare separate meals has deterred me, but I think now is the time. I've been told the "Bocca" burgers and chicken patties are excellent, and I already like the MorningStar sausage patties and links that are meat free, so maybe I can do this.

I'm not sure I can live without eggs, because I love them soooo much, but I know I can do without milk. I think eggs would be the last thing that I cut out of my diet. Do eggbeaters contain eggs? I could substitute if they don't. I've had eggbeaters before... not all bad.

I won't be missing much. I already eat mostly poultry and fish. I'm already missing a good t-bone or ribeye steak, but the prices of those cuts of beef are enough to kill you if the hormones and bi-products the cows are pumped up with don't. Yeah, I know chickens are pumped full of junk to, but I don't even LIKE chicken! We mostly eat ground turkey breast, turkey sausage, turkey bacon, etc. etc. I guess I can keep that up for the family, and I can eat the vegetarian meats.

I will try to post regular updates on my progress. I'm not going to go "cold-turkey", no pun intended, so this will be an on-going process.

So Much To Do

My mind is spinning out of control with all the ideas of things I would like to do that are web related. I have started and stalled on so many web projects that it's hard for me to keep track. Every few months or so, I re-evaluate the projects and decide what I really have time to work on or what I really WANT to work on. The problem is that I want to work on all of them, which is a problem because they are not revenue generators YET! It's hard because designing brings in the revenue, but also requires A LOT of time. The side projects are great ideas, but require dedication and time, which I have little or none, in order to grow and prosper.

The catch is that I find myself working on side projects and feeling great while doing them, but my real work is giving me a feeling of dread similar to when I was working at a 9 to 5. There was a time when I spent practically every waking hour designing for others, and loving every minute of it, but now, not so much. I mean, I like it sometimes, but I no longer feel like going out of my way unless it's something that I can really sink my teeth in to. My personal projects are exciting to me, and I can't wait until the day I can afford to dedicate the time to them.

This would be a non-issue if I could only find an experienced designer/web geek/web programmer type to work with me. I have a little data entry assistance, but the majority of my work requires skills in all areas of design and development.

I feel like my creativity has been stifled. I rarely have the opportunity to create things that speak to me. Most of those I work with don't have the same appreciation for the virtual world that I do. They don't care, and maybe I care too much.

There is just so much more that I would like to be doing creatively, but I have not been able to work things out to allow for the type of artistic freedom I need.

Narcissistic Tendancies

Why do people seem to think that I am anxiously sitting at my computer monitoring my email or intently listening for my phone to ring in anticipation of complying with and satisfying their every want and need?

Is everyone so caught up in thinking they are the "ONE", the only "ONE", that they seriously don't consider that many many many others are after the same things that they desire?

The communications I receive, practically on a daily basis, request and sometimes demand this, that or the other. I often find it irritating to receive an email request, and if the task desired is not completed withing 5-10 minutes of receipt, the sender is dialing my phone number in an effort to determine why their request was not completed.

Okay, that's a bit extreme, but you get the picture. Immediate gratification... I admit that I seek it on the regular, but I also have consideration for others, and with that I realize that I am not the only person seeking a particular thing or service.

As much as we would all like to believe it does, "the world does not revolve around you". We all need to take a deep breath, think for a minute, let go of that me first cause I am who I am attitude, and think of someone else!

Moving Forward - My Goals For 2008

I haven't posted for nearly a month. So many things have taken up my time and thoughts including health issues, business, preparing for the Holiday's, taking care of family and the list goes on.

During my downtime, I've been reflecting on the past year. It hasn't been the best of years, but like they say "every day won't be pie". I'm not gonna sit here and complain about all the things that didn't go my way in 2007, so in my ongoing effort to be positive, instead I am using my energy to look forward to all the things I hope to accomplish in the New Year.

Here are my goals for 2008:

- BUSINESS -

Revamp It! My business website needs a facelift. There's so much I need and want to do to improve the look, and substance of the site. It's difficult for me to create for myself, so I really need to plan and write.

It's time to update my business. I plan to purchase all new software. Feel free to chip in - check out my wishlist to the right :-)

- PERSONAL -

Time to do some home improvement. I think my living space brings me down. It's hard to find time to concentrate on getting our living space up to par, but I must focus on this in order to maintain my sanity. I want rooms that exude comfort and home, not clutter and mess. That will be difficult to achieve with the limited space and finance I have to work with, but it must be done. IKEA.... Here I Come!

Oh my goodness! Thanksgiving is only one week away! This year has flown by, and I'm just behind. Feels like I've spent most of my time playing catch-up since Julian was born.

Anywho... I have something to look forward to for next week. The James Bond Marathon on SpikeTV starts on Monday. It's shorter and earlier this year. It usually starts the Wednesday before the holiday and lasts through the weekend. I guess I'll have to make due and although I'll be working Monday and Tuesday, I'll try to see as much of it as I can.

I know we have enough conspiracy theories floating around these days, but I have to wonder about all the recalls for products made in China. Are they conspiring to poison the children in the USA for some eventual power play?

Recently, I was in the market for a new curling iron, and while shopping for the right one, I noticed on one of the boxes that there was a warning. The warning was for lead in the power cord!! I couldn't believe it. It was specific to California consumers, but my thought was if there's too much lead in it for California, then it was too much lead for it to be sold here in the U.S. period. What ever happened to MADE IN THE U.S.A.?
